A defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about secret matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
