India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Haze Post Celebrations
Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Various sections of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing 15-20x above acceptable standards.
Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Developments
Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected city administration petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judges agreed to the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
International Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing declining air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

The situation in the capital is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.
In these regions, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.
Medical and Economic Impact
Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.
This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can result in malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 early deaths per year in Delhi.
